I am a trainer, what do I need to provide CCHI for my renewal?

Certificants who are trainers/instructors must provide the following types of documentation as proof of CE.

1. Proof of training delivery – any publicity material (flyer, ad, brochure, conference schedule, etc.) about their training which lists the following information:

  • Credential holder’s name and designation as instructor/presenter/trainer.
  • The title (topic) or name of the educational event.
  • The name of the training entity (organization or individual) delivering the course,
  • The date(s) of the event.
  • The number of actual contact hours of the event.

2. Proof of training experience (e.g., Curriculum Vitae, personal or advisor’s attestation) specifying delivery of any combination of academic and non-academic (conferences, workshops, in-service).

  • 40 hours of training interpreters (any setting, including basic/beginner level training).
  • 40 hours of other training (e.g., language instructor at school or college, cultural competence trainer, instructor of nursing).

Which CE topics are accepted?

CCHI accepts CE topics that are beyond-beginner level of complexity AND address the essential body of knowledge that serves as the context for the healthcare interpreting profession and align with one or more of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for competent performance of the job of the healthcare interpreter.

For the list of specific accepted categories and topics, go to our Renewal Process webpage and click at the corresponding bar.

What are non-instructional CE activities?

Non-instructional CE activities are defined as “activities that support the healthcare interpreting profession though volunteerism, leadership and research.”

CCHI certificants are allowed, as an option, to submit non-instructional CE equal to up to 8 hours (points) per each four-year cycle towards their certification renewal requirements.

  • One (1) point in non-instructional CE activities equals 1 CE hour for certification renewal purposes.
  • Points are earned for unique and mutually exclusive experiences and not for interrelated experiences (see examples below).
  • Points do not reflect the actual hours of work.

For more details, go to our Renewal Process webpage and click at the corresponding bar.

What is performance-based CE?

Performance-based (PB) training is training aimed to improve the healthcare interpreter’s skills in the three interpreting modes: consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation. PB courses must include instructor-led practice in those modes of interpreting (in-person or online).

Ethics or terminology-only courses are not considered PB in this context.

Keep in mind that interpreting (or translating a document) in itself, or preparing for an interpreting assignment, is not considered to be continuing education. All CE activities must be instructor-led, either in an in-person or online format. Online courses do not need to have a live instructor, but must be structured in a way that allows the student to practice the three modes of interpreting and receive some feedback or model interpretation of assignments. The same applies to online translation courses.

For more info, go to our Renewal Process webpage.

Where can I find continuing education (CE) programs?

  • Accredited CE programs are listed in the National Registry of CEAP-Accredited Continuing Education Programs.
  • Some accredited CE programs are available at CCHI’s Online Training Portal.
  • CCHI guarantees acceptance of appropriately furnished proof of CE only for CEAP-accredited CE courses because such courses have undergone a thorough review process and meet CCHI’s renewal criteria. However, CCHI does not require that certificants complete only CEAP-accredited CE courses.

CCHI will accept all CE courses that meet CCHI’s requirements for continuing education as described at our Renewal Process webpage as long as sufficient information for the evaluation is provided by the certificant. If the course is not already accredited by CCHI, it is the certificant’s responsibility to provide enough information that CCHI can evaluate whether the course meets the CE requirements. The information needed may include, but is not limited to, the course description, agenda, syllabus, student handouts, etc. This information may be required in addition to the document verifying the certificant’s completion of the course (i.e. certificate of attendance/completion, badge, etc.), especially if the title of the course does not indicate the specific subject matter or level of complexity (i.e. continuing education vs. beginner-level/basic training).

How many CE hours (CEUs) should I have to recertify?

  • 32 hours of CE addressing healthcare interpreter knowledge and skills are required every 4 years.
  • A minimum of 4 CE hours every four-year cycle must be in performance-based topics. (These hours are required.)
  • A maximum of 8 CE hours every two-year cycle may be earned as non-instructional CE activities. (These hours are optional, not required.)

More information is at the Renewal Process webpage.

What is accredited for XYZ conference?

First, keep in mind that it’s the conference organizers who decide to accredit their event with CEAP/CCHI, and they might choose not to accredit it at all. The conference organizers in their materials (online or paper) usually specify which sessions are accredited. CCHI lists most conferences and corresponding accredited sessions at this Interpreting Industry Conferences webpage. If the conference is already over, please check the Past Conferences page.

Why can’t I login to the recorded webinar?

  • First, make sure you are logging in at the correct website. The CE training modules based on the recorded webinars are located at this website: http://cchiinterpreters.org, and the username/password are different than for the CCHI Profile account (at https://cchi.learningbuilder.com).
  • Then check that you are entering the correct username: you created it yourself, and it may not necessarily be your email address (although, it may be just that).
  • If you still cannot login, please do not create a new account, email us at info@cchicertification.org and we’ll reset your password, please specify in your email that you need to reset your password for the CE training website.

Who do I contact if I have audio or other connection issues during the webinar?

CCHI uses the GoToWebinar® platform for its webinars. CCHI staff does not provide any logistical support related to it. To make sure your device and internet connection are webinar-ready, check your system now. If you want more technical details, you can read about the system requirements here. Read more about the webinar application here: https://support.logmeininc.com/gotowebinar?c_name=prodselect. If you still need help, contact the GoToWebinar® support directly at https://support.logmeininc.com/gotowebinar/contactus.

I registered early but I am not able to join the webinar. What happened? Why is it that I cannot join the webinar even though I registered early?

CCHI allows 800 people to register for a webinar. Out of that number only 500 will be admitted on the day of the webinar on a first-come-first-serve basis. The key to securing your seat on the day of the webinar is to login at least 10 minutes before the webinar start time. In our experience, the webinar is full, i.e. all 500 people are logged in at around 5 minutes after the start time. The 300 extra registrations are on the ‘waiting list’ since many people (in our experience about that many) don’t attend at the last moment for various reasons. Keep in mind that although CCHI webinars are free to attendees, the cost of delivery is rather high, and, at this time, we cannot afford to pay for more than 500 seats.
