Employer Categories from Which CCHI Accepts Attestations about Language Proficiency in a Language Other Than English (LOTE)

The information provided below applies ONLY to Tier 2-3 Languages.

CCHI accepts employer attestations about an applicant’s language proficiency in a Language Other Than English (LOTE) only from the types of employers described below.

The following categories of organizations that employ or contract with interpreters have been selected based on the results of the national survey “Language Proficiency for Interpreters” conducted by CCHI in December 2022:

  1. Hospital or Public Health Department where the candidate performs one of the following:
    1. interprets at least 20 hrs a week
    2. is a qualified bilingual healthcare provider or staff member
  2. Large language company providing services in multiple states or nationally (e.g., AMN, CLI, Cyracom, LanguageLine Solutions, MARTTI by UpHealth, etc.)
  3. State-level language company
  4. University or college (community or commercial) where the candidate teaches LOTE
  5. Military service as military linguist

Documentation from other types of employers is not accepted.

Attestations from an employer must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Applicant must interpret at least 20 hours a week for that employer.
  2. Applicant must have interpreted for that employer for at least 1 full year.
  3. If applicant is a bilingual employee, the employer should explain in reasonable detail how their LP was assessed.
