Subject Matter Experts of Job Task Analysis Study 2016

cchi-jta2016-volunteer panelists-web An important step of any Job Task Analysis (JTA) study is selecting and convening a panel of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). SMEs' role is to review the previous definition of the healthcare interpreter and the job domains and tasks, provide guidance about any innovations and changes in the profession since the time of the previous JTA, and draft the new JTA survey based on the current understanding of the profession.

When selecting the JTA panelists, CCHI has followed the best practices in the field of certification and applied the following criteria:

  • years of experience in healthcare interpreting (from 2 to over 20 years)
  • primary interpreting modality (face-to-face, telephonic or remote video)
  • primary interpreting setting (hospital, public health, physician practice, insurance plan)
  • employment status in relation to healthcare interpreting (staff, contractor, volunteer)
  • frequency of interpreting in healthcare settings
  • linguistic and cultural diversity
  • acquisition of the non-English language (native, non-native and heritage speaker)
  • general educational background (from high scool to Ph.D. candidates)
  • demographic and geographic diversity
  • experience in addition to healthcare interpreting (as interpreting services manager, healthcare provider, interpreter trainer, court interpreter or translator)
  • certification status.

The 15 selected SMEs represented the breadth and depth of our profession.  They worked for two full days under the guidance of Dr. James Henderson, Executive Vice-President and Senior Psychometrician at Castle Worldwide, who oversees CCHI's JTA project.
